讲座内容摘要

This paper studies how firms expand and maintain their import supplier base, and how they reconfigure sourcing networks after unexpected disruptions. Using highly disaggregated Chinese transaction data following China’s WTO entry, we exploit antidumping (AD) investigations as unanticipated trade shocks and document stylized facts on import sourcing dynamics. We then develop a parsimonious model in which firms face limited search capacity when adjusting sourcing origins. Guided by the model, we estimate the effects of China’s AD investigations on firms’ entry into and exit from import origin markets. AD shocks induce greater churning for targeted imports: firms simultaneously increase experimentation with new origins and accelerate exit from existing origins. For non-targeted imports, firms become more inert, reducing both entry and exit. These responses are highly heterogeneous: firms with narrower supplier bases and tighter sourcing capacity constraints tend to adjust more aggressively, whereas firms with broader supplier networks exhibit more muted reallocation. Therefore, the trade effects of AD policy extend well beyond the directly investigated products and origins through firms’ endogenous adjustment of their supplier bases.
